-------------

Each year Bravo Music Matters conducts after-school piano programs in seven locations throughout the Vail Valley and two locations in Lake County. Lessons are half hour long for up to six students in each class. Lessons are taught by accomplished high school pianists under the direction of mentor teacher and volunteer Lynn Chapin. Each location also employs a teaching assistant who not only helps in the classroom but is training to take over a teaching position for the following year.

The program has approximately 100 students and a retention rate of nearly 90% from year-to-year. Children are tested on the programs core competencies and objectives in the middle of the year and at the end of the year to ensure progress and student success.

Program Goals

During each session, beginning students will be introduced to a mix of listening skills, finger coordination, the topography of the keyboard and understanding the relationship of the musical staff. Students will develop an enthusiasm for music and a desire to learn keyboard skills.

Students of the Bravo Music Matters After-School Piano programs will gain a fundamental ability to accomplish the following:

> Recognize pitch (up or down)
> Distinguish skips and steps
> Create mood (happy = fast, bouncy and major keys; sad = slow and minor keys)
> Display proper piano technique with regard to posture, finger and hand positioning
> Think and feel in a musical manner
> Gain a broader appreciation of music and creativity

Core Competencies

Upon completing the Bravo Music Matters After-School Piano program, beginner students will:

> Have the opportunity to play simple melodies in the 5-finger position
